10K EGP compensation to each victim of Alexandria tram power cable

CAIRO: The Ministry of Solidarity announced it would pay 10,000 EGP ($1,245) in compensation to the family of each of the seven victims killed Sunday after a tram power cable fell in rain water flooding the streets in Alexandria, Youm7 reported.

In statements to Youm7, Minister Ghada Waly said that a committee was formed to estimate the citizens’ losses due to the heavy rain that has hit the city since Saturday night. The affected families will be financially compensated, according to Waly.

She further added that the ministry will provide tents and accommodation for those who need for temporary basis.

Before the accident, the victims were reportedly sheltering from rain near the tram in Moharam Beek St. A horse was reportedly killed in the accident.

According to pictures circulating on social media and reported by the news about the weather change, Alexandria has been the most affected governorate, with water inundating the streets and covering cars, trees and cornich.

Egypt’s Meteorological Authority (EMA) has warned citizens of a wave of a unstable weather prevailing across the country for the next 72 hours, and escorted with active wind, heavy rain and around 10-degree drop in temperature.

Citizens are urged to wear heavy clothes when they are outdoors.
