CAIRO: A police officer was wounded Thursday evening in a drive-by shooting in Egypt’s Delta governorate of Sharqia, Youm7 reported.

Amir Samir, 29, a police captain at Al Ibrahimya police station was injured in the arm after unknown assailants opened fire at him on his way back home from work, a well-informed source at the Sharqia security directorate told Youm7.

The perpetrators have not yet been identified by official security bodies, the source said, adding that no one immediately claimed responsibility for the assassination attempt so far.

Egypt has witnessed a significant rise in militancy since the military-backed ouster of Islamist President Mohamed Morsi in July 2013 following mass protests against his rule. According to the Interior Ministry, militant attacks have killed more than 500 security personnel since then.

On Saturday, a Police officer was killed and nine police personnel injured after a bomb exploded nearby their armored vehicle in restive North Sinai’s Arish city, the state news agency MENA reported.
