CAIRO: A total of 1,065 classes to eradicate the illiteracy of Egyptian women were opened in rural areas since the implementation of the Literacy Efforts Support Project, the National Council of Women (NCW) announced in a statement Thursday.

The said classes succeeded in eradicating the illiteracy of 17,369 women in rural areas so far, head of NCW Mervat al-Talawy was quoted by Asway Masrya Thursday. She added that other 62 new literacy classes are to be opened in 16 villages soon.

Illiteracy rates among women reached 33.6 percent while it reached 18.5 percent among Egyptian men, Talawy said, adding that the situation “pushed the NCW to take serious measures to put an end to illiteracy by 2020.”
