“Mentally-ill” student commits suicide by jumping off Cairo Tower

CAIRO: A university student committed suicide Saturday by throwing himself off the Cairo Tower; his father said he suffered mental disorder, according to Al-Masry Al-Youm newspaper.

Mohamed A., 22, jumped from the top of the 187-meter Cairo Tower and fell on its administrative building. Police reported that he sustained full crush in the head, abdominal laceration and visceral injuries.

The victim is a student at the American University in Cairo (AUC.) Prosecution has ordered investigation into the incident and a forensic autopsy on the corpse.

Similar suicide incidents, especially among youth have been reported lately in Egypt citing reasons including unemployment, financial distress, as well as frustration.

However, Egypt is among the least states with suicide rates recording 1.7 (indicating both sexes) per 100,000 according to World Health Organization in 2012. The statistics showed female suicide rates higher with 2.4, while male suicide rate recorded 1.2.

In May 31, a high school student attempted to commit suicide because of a difficult exam.

In September 2014, a 48-year-old man hanged himself from a billboard; reports suggested he was facing financial hardship.

During the past months, several incidents of people who committed suicide by jumping in front of a metro train at a Cairo station were reported.

Around 2,700 Egyptian females tried to commit suicide in 2009 due to spinsterhood, according to a 2010 study by the National Center for Toxins at Cairo University.
