Rafah crossing reopens Tuesday for three days

CAIRO: Two days after being closed, Egypt-Gaza border crossing of Rafah will reopen Tuesday in the two directions for three days, the Palestinian embassy in Cairo said in a statement Sunday.

“Opening the crossing in both directions comes after intensive contact by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas with his Egyptian counterpart President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi,” the statement read.

The statement commended Sisi’s recent instructions to alleviate to open the crossing for the second time since the advent of Ramadan on Thursday. Ramadan is the ninth month in the Islamic calendar, during which Muslims worldwide fast and many people travel to Mecca is Saudi Arabia for a minor pilgrimage.

The crossing was opened June 13 for three days and extended to three more days; the turnout of Palestinians who crossed into both directions reached 577 people, while 12 aid trucks crossed into Gaza strip.
