CAIRO: Attorney-General Hisham Barakat has a dislocated shoulder, fractured facial bones and a nose injury as a result of a car bomb attacks on his convoy in Cairo Monday, Youm7 quoted a medical source.
The source assured that the health status of the top prosecutor is “stable” and that he is undergoing necessary medical examinations.
The car bomb was parking on the side of a road at Hegaz Square in Cairo’s Heliopolis district, and detonated once Barakat’s convoy became close.
A group that proclaims itself as “Giza Popular Resistance” claimed responsibility for the attack on its Facebook page. The group said it has “bombed the prosecutor’s car and another two vehicles.”
ON TV reported that two members of security forces and a civilian were injured in the attack.
Expert suggests information was leaked
Tareq Abu el-Saad, an expert of the Islamic movement, suggested that the Attorney-General was targeted because he refers most of the cases filed against the Muslim Brotherhood to courts.
In statements to ONTV, Saad described the attack as a “desperate attempt” amid “security crackdown on the Brotherhood and jihadists.”
Saad also speculated that information on the route and timing of the convoy’s movement was leaked.
In September 2013, then-Minister of Interior Mohamed Ibraihm survived a car bomb attack similar to that of Barakat’s.
