CAIRO: Ukraine will supply Egypt with 289 LAZ buses per a contract worth $70 million to serve in Cairo’s public transportation system, Youm7 reported Monday.

Egypt’s Prime Minister Ibrahim Mahlab, Cairo Governor Galal el-Saeed and Ukranian ambassador to Cairo Hennadii Latii attended the signing of the contract with Ukrainian company City Transport Group Monday.

In March, Egypt received 200 new buses worth 180 million EGP ($23.59 million,) as a first batch of 600 buses UAE has granted to Egypt at a total cost of 550 million EGP ($72.08 million,) to improve Cairo public transportation fleet.

In July 2014, the government announced the establishment of a new public transportation company with investments estimated at 1 billion EGP ($1.4m).

The Egyptian military provided 36 buses to serve in Giza governorate in July after private bus drivers raised fares to more than the amount approved by the government, Youm7 reported.

An amount of 1.4 billion EGP was allocated to develop the transportation system in Egypt and provide more than 1,000 busses, Minister of International Cooperation Naglaa al-Ahwany said in a press conference at the Cabinet headquarters earlier in June.
