CAIRO: Al-Azhar University considers installing “digital fingerprint scanners” at the gates of its female campus dorm, said the university’s deputy president Ahmed Hosny.

Hosny told Youm7 that the e-fingerprint is “one of the leading security mechanisms set by the university in preparation for the next academic year.”

Police forces will reinforce their presence inside the university campus on a continuous basis he said, adding that armored vehicles will be also stationed in the perimeter of the university dorms “to combat any potential riots.”

Unlike other universities, Al-Azhar has yet to decide renewing its contract with the privately-owned Falcon Group International, in order to secure the university gates during the 2015-2016 academic year.

Since the academic year of 2013/2014, Al-Azhar University has witnessed wide-scale protests demanding the reinstatement of ousted President Mohamed Morsi.

Many students were arrested and expelled over accusations of participating in clashes with security forces, which left casualties among students.
