Cabinet approves 120M EGP in compensation to Dabaa displaced families

CAIRO: The Cabinet approved the allocation of 120 million EGP ($18.5 million) to compensate 1,300 persons displaced from the city of Dabaa where Egypt’s first nuclear power plant is being constructed, Dabaa residents’ spokesperson Mastour Abu Shekara told The Cairo Post Thursday.

In 1982, the government evacuated about 500 families from their homes to build the plant. However, the move was rejected by the residents.

In 2012, the armed forces reached pledged to build a new city for the displaced people in an area close to their homeland and promised to compensate the evacuated residents. The displaced families are scheduled to receive their residential apartments in the new city in Sep., Bu Shekara said.

The 120 million EGP in compensation is one of four installments totaling 371 million EGP, Bu Shekara said, adding that the installments will be paid in cash.

This week, a Russian delegation has visited the site of the plant in Marsa Matrough’s town of Dabaa, about 95 km east of the border with Libya, Bu Shekara said.

On Feb. 10, President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi said that Egypt has signed a memorandum of understanding with Russia to establish a nuclear power plant in Dabaa to produce electricity.
