2nd A\C carriage on Helwan-Marg metro line operational before Eid al-Fitr

CAIRO: A second air-conditioned metro carriage on Helwan-Marg line, the oldest line of Cairo’s metro, will operate before Eid al-Fitr mid-July, an official source at the metro told youm7 Wednesday.

“The metro carriage will operate on the first line within the deal of exporting 20 carriages from South Korean Hyundai Rotem for 2.2 billion EGP ($288.8 million,”) the source added.

The carriage is being tested before it is set to operate. The first air-conditioned metro carriage on Helwan-Marg line was successfully operational June 18.

Inaugurated in 1987, Helwan-Marg, the longest of Cairo’s metro lines and the most used, only has fans inside its carriages.

The government plans to expand its subway network, a daily essential for millions of Cairenes, and will disclose the company that would execute the Third Phase of the Third Metro Line in the coming period.

The Third Phase project is planned to connect Imbaba and Mohandiseen west of the Nile, and pass under the Nile River to Zamalek and continue to Attaba, Abassiya, Cairo Stadium, Heliopolis and the Cairo Airport.
