CAIRO: The Ministry of Health runs 40 hospitals after seizing them for belonging to the banned-Muslim Brotherhood group, Youm7 reported Wednesday.

“The Ministry of Health is managing the seized Brotherhood hospitals and forming their board of directors,” Ahmed Saafan, head of the Central Administration of Therapeutic Medicine, told Youm7.

Most recently, the ministry seized al-Zohour private hospital in 6th of October city in Giza Tuesday. The hospitals’ owner, Medhat Assem, is a member of the Brotherhood’s Guidance Bureau and wanted in several violence-related cases.

The ministry has formed the board of directors of around 30 hospitals so far, Saafan added.

A state-run committee was formed in November 2013 and was tasked with managing and seizing Muslim Brotherhood funds.

In January, the committee announced it seized the assets of some 901 Brotherhood members and 1,096 Brotherhood associations. The Brotherhood headquarters, schools, hospitals, pharmacies and charity associations are among the confiscated assets.

The seized assets and funds are then transferred to fall under the management of the government relevant bodies.

In December 2013, the Brotherhood was designated a “terrorist organization.” Since then, the authorities have launched a crackdown on the group, accusing its members and supporters of “terrorism-related” charges, inciting violence and disrupting public peace.
