CAIRO:  Cairo Center for Development praised Wednesday the appointment of the first female judge as an aide to Court of Cassation head saying “this decision is a significant step towards Justice and principles of equal opportunity.”

Earlier this month, the Supreme Judiciary Council appointed three aides for the Court of Cassation, including woman Judge Sally al-Seeidi, News al-Youm reported.

Seeidi is the first woman to take this post since the establishment of the court in 1931.

Graduated in 2007, the new judge is a mother of three children; two sons and a daughter. She started her judicial career in the Administrative Court.

Tahany al-Gebaly was Egypt’s first woman to hold a judiciary position. She was appointed by former President Hosni Mubarak in 2003 as vice-President of the Supreme Constitutional Court, the highest court in the state.

In June, Justice Minister Ahmed al-Zend announced the imminent appointment of a batch of Egyptian women as presiding judge in courts of first instance.

In 2007, 30 female judges have been appointed in the courts nationwide as a first group.
