Boy killed, another injured after bomb exploded in Cairo
A child was killed and another was injured after an improvised bomb went off in Manshyet Nasser district in Cairo, said a statement by the Interior Ministry.
The two children, Abanoub 6yrs and Amir 7yrs, found the ball-shaped bomb in a garbage pile, picked it and went to play in Abanoub’s apartment, where it exploded.
Cairo to see warm weather Sunday
Official forecasters expected a warm weather to prevail on Sunday, where Egypt to record highs of 25 degrees celsius and lows of 17 degrees.
“Internal” investigations opened into detainee’s death in custody: Interior ministry
Egypt’s Interior Ministry said an investigation into the death of a fish cart vendor, allegedly tortured by the police, is currently underway, Youm7 reported Saturday.
“The ministry’s investigation department has opened extensive investigations into the incident but we will wait until investigations currently carried out by the prosecution are over,” Major General Tarek Attia, Assistant Interior Minister for Media and Public Relations was quoted by Youm7 on Saturday.
Magdy Makeen, an Egyptian street vendor was allegedly arrested, beaten, and tortured to death while detained at al Ameryah police station north of Cairo on Sunday, his lawyer Ali al Halawany said Thursday.
“The forensic report proves there were clear signs of torture on Makeen’s body,” Halawany was quoted by Youm7.
Initial investigation carried out by the prosecution revealed that Makeen, 53, died in an accident during a police chase, according to Al Ahram.
Videos of Makeen’s bloodied body, showing a hospital worker de-shrouding his corpse to reveal a bleeding backside and bruises on his face have surfaced on social media during the past few days.
Egypt’s press syndicate head receives 2-year suspended sentence for sheltering fugitives
The Qasr el Nil Misdemeanor court on Saturday has handed Egypt’s Press Syndicate Chairman Yehia Qallash and two prominent board members a suspended sentence of two years in prison on charges of sheltering fugitives inside the syndicate’s headquarters, Youm7 reported.
The court also ordered they pay 10,000 EGP (about $700) bail each.
In June, Qallash along with the syndicate’s secretary-general Gamal Abdel Reheem and undersecretary Khaled El-Balshy were referred to court over sheltering journalists Mahmoud al Sakka and Amr Badr who were staging a sit-in to protest warrants issued for their arrest.
Balshy, the head of the syndicate’s Freedoms Committee said he will appeal Saturday’s ruling.
Egypt to hold public auction for 3,076 recovered state land on Wed.
The governmental committee, tasked with recovering state looted land announced it will hold a public tender on Saturday, Youm7 reported.
Saturday’s auction is the third phase to be held since an April announcement by the committee that 37,000 feddans of recovered land would be offered at public auctions for the incorporation into the government’s developmental plans.
A total of 1,775 feddans in Suez governorate and 1,301 feddans in Qena governorate will be put up for sale at Wednesday’s bidding, according to Ibrahim Mahlab, the head of the committee to recover the lands.
8 killed, 3 injured in road accident in Fayoum
Eight people were killed and four others injured on Friday in a collision between a pickup and a truck on the regional road in Fayoum, 90 kilometers west of Cairo, Youm7 reported.
The pickup was carrying workers from a brick factory in Giza, medical source told Youm7.
Many Egyptians die on the road as thousands of accidents take place every year. Lack of road safety measures in Egypt has been blamed by experts for the fatal crashes; however, officials say human errors represent main reason.
Two years ago, Egypt has embarked on a number of projects including applying maintenance to dilapidated bridges, construct new roads and launching drug-driving tests to truck drivers and school bus drivers.
