CAIRO: Prime Minister Ibrahim Mahlab inaugurated Saturday a project to produce radioactive isotopes in the Inshas research reactor in Sharqia governorate, according to a Cabinet statement.
The reactor has been developed and equipped to produce, for the first time, radioactive isotopes used in medical purposes, Youm7 reported.
“There is cooperation among the Ministry of Health, the National Cancer Institution, and the Egyptian Atomic Energy Authority (EAEA) to accelerate reaping the benefits from these products,” Mahlab said in the inauguration attended by the Minister of Electricity Mohamed Shaker and Argentinean ambassador in Cairo Sergio Alberto Baur.
All experimental tests have been conducted in cooperation with the Argentinean nuclear engineering company INVAP since 2013, al-Ahram reported.
Inshas reactor consists of two units and was built in cooperation with Russia during the late President Gamal Abdel Nasser’s era.
