CAIRO: A total of 1356 ships have crossed the new waterway of the Suez Canal since its inauguration in August 6, according to a report by the Suez Canal Authority (SCA.)

The ships that crossed the new branch of the canal, known in the local media as “New Suez Canal,” have varied in their tonnage and sizes.

Last week, a massive French container ship CMA CGM VASCO DE GAM crossed the new waterway, with length of 400 meters, width of 54 meters and its draft is 54 feet. The vessel was heading from Malaysia to Tangier City in Morocco.

Also earlier in August, the world’s second largest container ship MSC Oliver crossed the waterway in its first journey from China to Europe.

The new waterway was inaugurated in a huge ceremony attended by world leaders and representatives August 6.

“The Suez Canal revenues have amounted to 39.4 billion EGP ($5.04 billion,) in 2015,” Youm7 previously quoted Mohab Mamish, the chairman of the Suez Canal Authority.

The estimated $8.2 billion New Suez Canal project includes a 35-km parallel waterway flanking the existing 145-year old waterway, which links Asia and Europe.
