CAIRO: The total number of unregistered Syrian refugees in Egypt is estimated at 350,000 persons since the beginning of the ongoing Syrian uprising in 2011, said United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) spokesperson Marwa Hashem Saturday.

“The Commission is registering refugees in collaboration with governments through financial aid and support community centers; the number of Syrian citizens registered in Egypt is 131, 000,” she told the “Cairo Interview” talk show on Sky News Arabia.

The UNHCR coordinates with the Egyptian government to settle the situations of the Syrians whose residency permits have expired, and to assist them in renewing their residency for more 6 months, Hesham continued.

The commissioner receives between 700 and 1,000 daily requests submitted by Syrian refugees to renew their residencies in order to be able to receive U.N. aid, a UNHCR official previously told The Cairo Post.

There are an estimated more than 4 million Syrian refugees worldwide; the number of Syrian registered refugees in neighboring countries Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, and Lebanon reached 2.1 million Syrians, according to UNHCR figures.
