Egypt condemns Israeli police attack at al-Aqsa mosque

CAIRO: The Egyptian Foreign Ministry denounced Sunday the latest incursions by Israeli police into the Al-Aqsa Mosque.

“The continuous Israeli violations on Al-Aqsa Mosque represent an unacceptable escalation against the Islamic holy sites in the Palestinian territories,” The Egyptian Foreign Ministry stated.

Dozens of Israeli security forces reportedly raided Al-Aqsa mosque premises Sunday morning after clashes with Muslims praying, during attempts to bring them out of the mosque, the state news agency MENA reported.

“Egypt warns of the extreme gravity caused by Israel’s continuous policy of attacking Islamic religious sanctities and banning Palestinians the entrance of the mosque which undermines efforts to resume peace negotiations between the Palestinians and the Israelis,” the statement said.

The statement also called upon the Israeli authorities to avoid “brinkmanship” and respect the religious sanctity of  as a step to achieve the two-state solution.

Grand Imam of Al-Azhar Sheikh Ahmed el-Tayeb has also slammed the Israeli forces for preventing Palestinian worshipers from entering the mosque and called for “immediate intervention by the international community to stop the Israeli provocations,” Youm7 reported.
