CAIRO: Nine members of an alleged “terrorist cell” were arrested Friday in Fayoum, southwest of Cairo, after perpetrating a number of attacks on the police in recent months, Youm7 reported.

Two of the defendants are students and the rest are workers; they provided information on their alleged partners, an explosives storehouse that lies in a poultry farm on Fayoum-Cairo Road, according to the prosecution.

In the storehouse, the police found large amounts of explosive materials to manufacture improvised explosive devices (IEDs.)

Fayoum has been one of the governorates with several IED attacks as well as wide-scale arrests.

On Sept. 9, the Interior Ministry announced 47 people were arrested for allegedly belonging to the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood and attacking police officers in the governorate. A total of 116 others were arrested over protesting, blocking roads, and inciting riots in Fayoum, according to the police statement.
