CAIRO: The lawyers’ Syndicate called on judicial authorities to probe into the death of a lawyer at a police station in the industrial city of Kafr el-Dawwar in northern Egypt.
A statement by the syndicate’s Political Affairs Committee demanded to reveal the circumstances of the death of Lawyer Salah el-Basousy, after some of his colleagues reported he died after he was assaulted.
Ibrahim Elias, the head of the committee, said that if the assault was proved, the syndicate will formally “demand the prosecution to arrest the perpetrators and refer them to the criminal court,” he was quoted by Youm7.
Thus far, information about why El-Basousy was at the police station or whether he was in custody has not been disclosed yet.
The syndicate has recently condemned several attacks on lawyers by security representatives.
Two national security police officers are standing trial over charges of torturing and killing Lawyer Karim Hamdy at Matariya Police Station in Giza, in February.
In July, a policeman was detained for allegedly shooting lawyer Mohamed el-Gamal in a court; however, two main eyewitnesses came forward with different testimony saying that a prosecution secretary was the assaulter.
A large number of lawyers staged a one-day nationwide strike after a police officer hit a lawyer in the head with his shoe in Egypt’s Delta governorate of Damietta.
President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi interfered in the crisis and apologized to the lawyers, calling on policemen to “take care” while dealing with citizens.
