CAIRO: The 5th edition of the Cross Egypt Challenge, an annual motorcycle and scooter rally, will kick off Oct., 23 from Alexandria and will last for 9 days.
Egypt’s one-of-a-kind rally, which will be covered over the course of nine days, is scheduled to begin from the Mediterranean’s coastal city of Alexandria and ends under the foot of Great Pyramids of Giza.
“With a carefully planned route, the 2015 season of Cross Egypt Challenge will pass through many of Egypt’s finest spots including modern cities, coastal resorts, historical sites, Egyptian Eastern desert and Egypt’s Nile Valley,” according to the rally’s webpage.
The 2,200-kilometer route of this year’s edition will head from Alexandria southward to the old oasis of Fayoum en route to the Red Sea cities of Ain Sokhna and Hurghada. On Oct., 27, the riders will cross the Eastern Desert on their way to Luxor where they will stay for two days and celebrate the rally’s 5th anniversary.
The event is open to all riders of motorbikes and scooters from all over the world. Competitors from over 22 countries are expected to participate.
From Luxor, the rally will head back to Hurghada through a different route in the Eastern Desert before it reaches the Red Sea Coastal city of Marsa Alam where riders will camp before they start the rally’s last leg of the route scheduled to end at the foot of Giza Pyramids.
“The Tourism Promotion Authority (TPA) promotes the event in a bid to attract more tourists to Egypt, support alternative sports in Egypt and revive the country’s main source of income,” Sami Mahmoud, TPA chairman was quoted by Youm7.
