CAIRO: Women outnumber men four to one at the polls, stated High Elections Committee spokesperson Omar Marwan Sunday, adding that most voters were older than 60.
Voting for the parliamentary elections kicked off Sunday morning. The Local Administrative Development Minister Ahmed Zaki Badr told Youm7 that the government is considering declaring Monday a national holiday in an attempt to encourage a higher turnout in the final day of the election’s first phase.
Although women may outshine men in terms of voting, less than 5 percent of the candidates running are women; 308 out of more than 5,000.
The parliamentary elections are the final step in the political roadmap set out in 2013, which outlined the drafting of a constitution, which was adopted in January 2014, and presidential elections, which took place in May 2014.
