40% of Halayeb votes in first day of parliamentary elections

CAIRO: The voting in Halayeb and Shalatin southeast of Egypt reached 40 percent in the first day of the parliamentary elections on Sunday, according to secretary of Red Sea Governor Mostafa Sedqi.

This is the first time residents of Halayeb Triangle, an area of dispute between Egypt and Sudan, vote for their own representative in Egypt’s parliament. Previously, they voted for a representative of the Red Sea.

Some 22,269 voters in Halayeb will choose one candidate out of four running for the elections in the two-day poll ending Monday.

Meanwhile, voting in the entire Red Sea governorate reached only 12.45 percent in the first day. A total of 16 percent in Hurghada have cast their votes Sunday.
