U.S. navy worker pleads guilty of trying to spy for Egypt

CAIRO:  An Egyptian civil engineer working for the U.S. Navy Nuclear Engineering and Planning Department at Norfolk Shipyard pleaded guilty Monday over charges of attempting to leak clandestine information to an FBI agent posing as an Egyptian intelligence operative.

The Saudi-born Mostafa Ahmed Awwad, 36, was arrested in December 2014 following FBI agent James Blitzer, whose pseudonym is “yourself.”

Although he signed a non-disclosure agreement with the navy department, Awwad agreed to leak information to the agent.

Awwad, married to an American, admitted that he attempted to provide Blitzer with drawings of the USS Gerald R. Ford. A sentence against him will be issued on Sep. 21, the Washington
