CAIRO: Kasr el-Nile Misdmeanor Appeal Court upheld Saturday the acquittal of 17 people of organizing an illegal protest, in which activist Shaimaa al-Sabbagh was shot dead by central security force, Youm7 reported.
The court rejected an appeal submitted by the late Prosecutor Hisham Barakat in May against the protesters’ acquittal.
On May 23, Abdeen Misdemeanor Court acquitted 17 members of the Socialist Popular Alliance Party of violating the protest law and inciting riots, saying the acquittal is based on “the ambiguity and lack of evidences against the defendants.”
Sabbagh was fatally shot in a peaceful march commemorating the 4th anniversary of the January 25 Revolution near Tahrir Square.
In June, the court sentenced Lieutenant Yassin Salah el-Din to 15 years in prison for killing activist Sabbagh.
