CAIRO: President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi has tasked the Suez Canal Authority (SCA) with a project to develop the eastern Port Said area through the establishment of trade and logistics services zones, Youm7 reported Thursday.

In a Thursday meeting with Mohab Mamish Chairman of the SCA, and Emad al-Alfy, head of the military Engineering Authority, Sisi discussed proposals to develop the port in participation with the Engineering Authority.

The project is a part of the Suez Canal Axis Development Project which aims at expanding the Suez Canal region’s role as a global, industrial, and logistics centre and a global hub due to its logistics and industrial services.

“The SC Zone aims to transform the area in the hinterland of the Suez Canal into a world-class logistics and industrial zone. To achieve this, over 13,000 hectares have been made available for development over the first phase,” according to the webpage of SCA.

Meanwhile, Mamish said that the inauguration ceremony of the New Suez Canal scheduled for Aug. 6 will not cost the state budget any expenses, as SCA has launched a bank account for public donations funding the ceremony.
