CAIRO: A total of 47 people were arrested early Friday in the Delta’s governorate of Beheira while attempting to illegally immigrate to Italy, Youm7 reported.

Those arrested include 12 Egyptians, 13 Eritreans, 12 Sudanese, Six Somalis, and four Ethiopians. They reported that three Egyptians had sealed a deal with them to take them to Italy in return for $3,000 each, according to Youm7.

In a related context, 121 others were arrested near Egypt-Libya borders Thursday over an attempt to illegally travel to Libya, according to Youm7.

Over 3,000 illegal migrants to Libya are arrested per month while those who manage to infiltrate are a lot more, border officials at Siwa oasis and the Sallum border crossing told Youm7.

Despite the fact that wide swaths of Libya are under Islamist militias’ grip, illegal migrants still cross the borders in search for better life standards either in Libya or European countries on the Mediterranean.
