CAIRO: A total of 75 students have been expelled from Al-Azhar University’s Faculty of Islamic Studies for girls for their alleged implication in violence, Youm7 reported Wednesday.

The university’s vice president told Youm7 that 125 students were suspended for one year, totally 200 expelled students at all Al-Azhar University branches in all governorates.

Since the academic year of 2013/2014, Al-Azhar University has witnessed the most wide-scale protests that erupted at Egyptian universities, demanding the reinstatement of President Mohamed Morsi.

The academic year began after the August 2013 dispersal of the Rabaa al-Adaweya sit-in, where hundreds of Muslim Brotherhood protesters were killed by the police.

Many students were arrested over accusations of participating in clashes with security forces, which left casualties among students.

In March, 32 Al-Azhar University students had their four-year prison term commuted to one year, which they have already served since they were arrested in December 2013. They were charged of forcibly preventing fellow students from attending exams and violent protesting.
