CAIRO: President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi paid an abrupt visit to North Sinai Saturday to check the security measures following the Wednesday simultaneous attacks on military checkpoints in the peninsula, presidential spokesperson Alaa Youssef said in a Statement.

For the first time since assuming power in June 2014, Sisi has appeared in the army uniform as an indication of launching a war against terrorism.

The president praised the Egyptian army’s role in the restive Sinai where more than 170 militants have been killed by the military within the past two days.

“The history will record the Egyptian Army’s heroism and role to maintain the homeland security,” said Sisi.

Accompanied with the military Chief of the Staff Mahmoud Hegazy, Sisi inspected a central command of the Armed Force where he was updated on the process of security measures, Youssef added.

Sisi inspected a number of militants’ arms that have been seized by the army. He also inspected the security measures in one of police checkpoints there, Youssef noted.
