CAIRO: A senior police officer has survived an assassination attempt in Fayoum governorate, 100 kilometers southwest of Cairo, Youm7 reported Saturday.

Chef of the investigation department at the Fayoum police station, Mostafa Hassan accidentally saw, under his car, a “box” that was attached to the bottom of the car with an electrical circuit.

An explosive device was found inside the box before it was detonated by the Fayoum civil protection and bomb squad forces.

A police report was filed and prosecution has started investigations into the incident.

Attacks on security personnel and institutions come as part of the continuous conflict between the Egyptian military and the radical Islamist militants of Sinai Province that has been on the rise since the ouster of former President Mohamed Morsi in July 2013 following a mass protest against his rule.

Interior Minister Mohamed Ibrahim survived an assassination attempt in Cairo last September.
