CAIRO: The Administrative Court on Tuesday turned down a lawsuit calling for blocking Facebook in Egypt, Youm7 reported.

According to the court ruling, “blocking Facebook infringes the constitutional rights of Egyptian citizens and represents a blatant violation on the freedom of expression principal guaranteed by the constitution.”

The lawsuit was filed last year by lawyer Mahmoud Jewely, who demanded the popular social website be blocked over “spoiling public ethics, being used to spread rumors and facilitating prostitution.”

The court said the said violations should be dealt with individually.

An estimated 16.8 million Egyptians use the popular social networking site, according to a November 2013 report by Socialbakers.

Egypt is ranked 17th worldwide in terms of audience size of Facebook and first in the Arab region, according to Egypt Business Directory.
